According to author Robert Kaplan, the was the wrong choice. Kaplan recounts his journeys in the s and s though the Balkan Peninsula, describes the poeple that he meets, and discusses their tortured histories going back over years among wave after wave of conquering cultures Austrian, Hungarian, Roman, Russian, Greek, Turkish. This book provides a true "on the ground" insight into the causes of the multi-ethnic warfare that characterizes the region. Kaplan suggests that the first terrorists and their acts originated here, and are still alive in some form in the regional conflicts. A strong read, highly educational!
