Members of the Baptist Ministers Alliance of Indianapolis stand united in their biblical understanding of marriage and whom it is lawfully between, despite the recent vote in the Indiana House of Representatives to remove the second sentence of a proposed constitutional ban on gay marriage. That sentence, which would have banned civil unions and similar arrangements, did not cause the members of the BMA to waver in their understanding of the word of God. The Divine Architect has left us with this account of the first marriage:. The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame. Members of the BMA applaud the decision of the Indiana Senate to not put a referendum banning same-sex marriage on the November ballot. For even their females exchanged natural sexual intercourse for what is unnatural.
Using the Bible against LGBTQ+ people is an abuse of scripture
Homophobic opposition to same sex marriage is obviously visceral, but there is another more influential prejudice at play — adherence to an ancient text. Australians are becoming increasingly impatient with Christian opposition to same sex marriage, in large part because the arguments typically mounted against it appear so weak and unconvincing. The argument that marriage entails the possibility of having children is weak and historically inaccurate too. The idea that there are only two basic or normative genders, male and female, is similarly contradicted by accumulating evidence from the relevant sciences.
It is clear, however, that the Bible condemns homosexuality as an immoral and unnatural sin. Leviticus identifies homosexual sex as an abomination, a detestable sin. Every mention of marriage in the Bible refers to the union of a male and a female.
Increasing political and religious advocacy for homosexual1 practices, same-sex marriage, and alternate sexual identities has prompted us to clarify our position on these critical issues. We believe that all matters of faith and conduct must be evaluated on the basis of Holy Scripture, which is our infallible guide 2 Timothy — Since the Bible does speak to the nature of human beings and their sexuality, it is imperative that the Church correctly understands and articulates what it actually teaches on these matters which have now become so controversial and divisive. In effect, they seek to set aside almost two thousand years of Christian biblical interpretation and ethical teachings. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
