One practice that fascinates me is the extreme body modifications — they push the boundaries of what aesthetics are acceptable in society, and sometimes even what is acceptable for human beings. As body modification has become more popular, and even mainstream, tattoos and piercings no longer challenge our norms the way they used to in past decades. Plastic surgery has risen out of the secretive shadows and become something to aspire to publicly. But even as society has re-shaped its notions of how a human body can be customized, there are still many things that the masses are uncomfortable with, and even consider deviant. Today I wanted to explore some of the more unusual body modifications that are practiced by thousands of people worldwide, but that still live in the underground, and usually underpants.
Ritual piercings were common in the primitive and modern cultures. In fact, humanity has been doing it for a long long time. One of these rituals was celebrated at Phuket, Thailand's Vegetarian festival where devotees pierce their faces and deny eating meat to become "pure". Mediums, who were laymen and monks, pierce themselves particularly their cheeks with objects of different shapes and sizes while in an altered state to exhibit the powers and strength of the human body and spirit.
The history of the Prince Albert piercing, the most well known and widely practised of genital mutilation techniques, is shrouded in myth. The most common explanation is that the most eligible bachelor in England at the time, Prince Albert, adorned a 'dressing ring' for the purpose of being able to tie his penis back to hide his trouser bulge and to keep his foreskin pulled back so that it was always sweet smelling for his cousin and later wife, Queen Victoria. Our regular contributor, Joey Spinoza, knew nothing about the history of the incestuous and perverted English monarchy but when he put his crown jewels on the line in a pub bet recently he got more than he bargained for.
